Hmmm
This is gonna be a long day

That suuuuuuuucks!
What the heck is going on with that window? Is it just a piece of plate glass that dives right into a perpendicular wall?

The studs that frame in one of my garage windows are completely rotted. I just use that corner to store large objects and pretty much block it out of my sight and mind...

Yeah, some kind of hack job double pane situation. There’s some sort of frame for the three sides, and then two plates sandwiching that and up against the wall

Very weird.

Problem solved!

Garage is unfortunately not worth sinking money into. Maybe right before I sell it depending on things.

My garage was in terrible shape. I had to sink about $5k into it a couple years ago, because it was either that or tear it down and build a new one. I couldn’t afford that, so a new roof, new 18' door, new facias and soffits it was. Unfortunately the floor is still garbage, it’s slowly turning itself back into gravel.

In spite of everything I’ve said about my home, it was still a bargain, and I regret nothing. But man, I need improve my DIY skills or make more money ASAP.

Feels. I spent all afternoon fixing a water damaged soffit on the second floor of the house. About 3 ft rotted. Now I need to figure out how the water is getting in.

I totally understand. My house was far and away the best deal in town, but man we’ve had to put a looooot of money into it, and we aren’t nearly done yet. My DIY skills are pretty strong, but materials aren’t free and time is hard to come by while raising two little ones.

Finding water leaks is very frustrating. I usually resort to blind and hopeful patching.

Well.. uh... I have a puppy. That’s my excuse.
[Opens beer]
Good dog. Stay.

It is adjacent to the chimney, so a good bit of tar will be going up.

Balls, that was our whole attic at our old house. Landlords wouldn’t replace the roof, but would pay for tar and tarpaper to put down everywhere over the dead shingles.
That stopped it from dripping in through the living room and kitchen for the most part, but the walls were soaked. That house got torn down after mold started coming through the walls

I’ve been tarring my parents roof for 13 years. They have one of those flat one piece roofs, so you can scout for cracks and seams and just slap the tar on. They REALLY need to replace it though...

Nice try :)
So what do you do? You’re in the industry somehow, given all the construction in progress photos you’ve posted.
Also, would you like me to shame you with my schedule for remodeling our second floor before kids?

I don’t do anything close to what people suspect on here. I am not an inspector, agent, or an appraiser; nor am I a plumber, carpenter, or a mason/stone/tile guy. I do stuff in places that pay the bills is pretty much how I’d describe it :D
Also, you can’t shame me -- I own a 1 bedroom house. I don’t even know what a “second st0re-E” is!

Salesman, or cleaning guy?
That’s not a house, that’s a cottage :)
Before kids, I gutted our second floor to the studs and remodeled it nearly by myself. I’d get home around 4:30, change into grubby clothes, and head upstairs and get working. I’d work until whenever my wife came home and made dinner, which was usually somewhere between 8-9. Then I’d shower and pass out. Repeat five days a week, and put another 12 hours or so in on the weekend.

welcome to anywhere you mean. :P

Well the ants, yeah probably. But I imagine Arizona or California have less rot issues
![]() 10/02/2016 at 21:03 |

We have lots of “dry rot” and termite issues in California- I recently spent many $$ getting the front stairs and landing to my house replaced. And they were only about 10 years old. Pressure treated lumber this time!

Oh damn, I didn’t know that. That really sucks

Over 50 days since the flood and a friend of ours still can’t start reconstruction because the moisture level is too high. They finally listened and popped a tile off the the floor. Standing water trapped between the tile and the slab. It was all we could do not to say “told you so”.

Oh geez, that doesn’t sound fun to deal with
